The story was developed from an idea that Alex Anwey, one of the writers, had been exploring since he began filmmaking as a teenager. He decided to develop a project about an anti-gay hate crime in India where a young gay man is killed, but his friends must fight back against unjust laws to bring him back to life. The script began with the protagonist struggling to find love at this lowest point in his life. After he is attacked he has an epiphany about the laws that are oppressive. “It’s about fighting against that, fighting against oppression. You can’t imagine what it’s like to live in a world where you don’t love who you are, where people are constantly saying things about you. It’s only when you lose all hope of being loved that you end up fighting for something so important, so real. This film is not just about one incident,” said Alex Anwey, filmmaker and co-writer of Newton. After the script was written, Anwey reached out to his friend Ritesh Batra based in London. “I had worked with Ritesh on my short film, The Boy With A Coin,” said Anwey. “He had developed a positive reputation for helping filmmakers turn their scripts into successful projects.
